I Did Something Wrong on WordPress Today

Earlier today I drafted a post about titles & SEO. I finished it and, instead of properly saving the draft, I published it. Aaaaack!! But I quickly realized that there were flaws in it, mistakes I needed to correct, and tried to put it back in my Drafts folder. Nope. It went to Trash. Then I heard from a friend who’d clicked on it from his Reader. He was annoyed because the link said the post was PRIVATE and he didn’t have the authority to read it.Β

What? I didn’t mean for that to happen. So wrong! Obviously, I clicked too fast (bad habit) & tossed that poor post into the wrong folder. By then it as hours later & I was embarrassed. Other people had clicked! They must’ve thought I was posting privately too, and that they were excluded. No, no, no!

For better or worse, this entire blog is public.Β

Anyway, I permanently trashed that particular post a few minutes ago. Blam! Gone. I’ll do one about titles some other time.

  1. Hi Robin – all you have to do is change the date of publish, forward (e.g., a few days) to allow yourself time to make necessary changes. Then, when it’s ready to be posted, simply change the post time to a few minutes from that moment, and “Schedule” it. If it’s in the trash but not emptied, you can restore the post & change the publishing data, as noted.

  2. Phil!! Thank you! That’s great to know! I’ve never tried the scheduling thing before. I will, soon! (That post about titles is gone, tho – I was too embarrassed about it to keep it around. πŸ˜‚ But it’s OK. Easy to rewrite.) Thank you again! πŸ₯°

  3. Did you physically empty the trash, or simply delete the post? You can go to All Posts and click on Trash – if it’s in there, select it and Restore. Then, change the publish time to the future and Schedule. Make your edits, and then either Publish, or set a day/time to publish later. Almost 100% of my posts are made in advance & scheduled.

  4. You’re so kind!! No, went to every place I could go and trashed it as many ways as I could. It’s gone-gone. I was upset, didn’t ever want to see it again. I may be crummy at publishing because I click waaay too fast but I’m REALLY GOOD at throwing stuff out…πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚…Thank you, Phil! I’ll for sure try the scheduling option. In all these years I never have, and it sounds useful + easy. Perfect!! ((thank you hugs))

  5. Robin, Phil’s a great resource, good info about the trash etc. And really, I know of no one who’s not truncated, trashed, mashed, or swallowed a post whole when 1st starting out (or later, lol! 😏). I think your “I did something….” post is perfect. Do a comic recap, exaggerate everything, then say – ahhh, this is what I shoulda done, lol! But more seriously, no big deal – anyone who’s still not learning is, well, not learning ❀️

  6. Well, in a way, that little oopsie moment did result in a new blog post, so I guess that’s a win. Sometimes my mistakes result in cool stories to write about too, so for me, there’s always a silver lining, lol. Thanks for sharing!
