Online Sketching with Pixels: Sketchpad

Made online using Sketchpad

A few months ago I re-discovered the online sketching app Sketchpad. It was fun to use years ago and seems to be even better now. They’ve added features! The last time I tried it I was using my desktop computer. “Mousing” to draw is challenging. Fortunately, Sketchpad worked well with my graphics pen/tablet. These days it responds beautifully on a tablet when I draw with my fingers. Will sketching online replace the oh-so-satisfying tactile experience of moving a pencil or brush across toothy paper? Probably not. But it’s endlessly eager to do what you want, when and where you want to.Β

Sketchpad is online, here:

Here’s the User Guide:

LOL – I didn’t know about the User Guide until a few minutes ago. Although Sketchpad is easy to figure out (REALLY!!) the User Guide is probably helpful.

  1. It’s incredibly useful to be able to sketch digitally I think; grandson (8) and I both do it, and there’s a connection of working with one’s finger(s) that creates something akin to writing cursive by hand, and mind/body connecting that’s supposed to be very good for us – yea! And I have found sketching this way does translate somewhat to sketching on paper etc; maybe just more awareness of one’s tactile hand/eye movement?

    1. Hi!!! Yes! You’re right! It’s all connected! I love making digital marks & editing. Everything can be “undone,” so experimenting is a joy. Thank you very, very much!! πŸ₯°πŸ‘‹

  2. I’ve never tried online sketching, but I’ll give anything in art a try! That’s how we learn and grow, right? So, yep, I followed your link. I will definitely play around a bit.

        1. 😁Yes! It took me a while to get used to letting the cursor/finger/mouse (whatever method you use) linger over a spot, to let the little pixels spread put underneath. It can act like shading! So cool! Thank you!! πŸ₯°πŸ‘‹

        2. ::runs back:: Not all the tools in Sketchpad do the spreading-out thing. The one that I like most is “Sketchy” in the dropdown menu. I think its icon looks like a little ghost. πŸ€—πŸ‘‹
